THE ROLE OF THE TRANSPORT INDUSTRY IN THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF UKRAINE

Antonina Bazyliuk Volodymyr Gubenko

Abstract

The transport complex of Ukraine is a crucial component of the country's economy, influencing its competitiveness in the global market. Purpose. The article considered the dynamics of freight transportation by types of transport in Ukraine during the period from 2018 to 2023, as well as issues related to the material and technical base of transport enterprises. According to the analysis, the total volume of freight transportation during this period decreased by 42.76%. The most significant losses were recorded in railway (-53.73%) and marine transport (-100%), which is attributed to geopolitical challenges, economic problems, and insufficient modernization of infrastructure. Road transport has maintained its position due to its flexibility and ability to provide door-to-door delivery, though it has a negative environmental impact due to high carbon dioxide emissions. Railway transport remains a key mode for large-scale freight transportation; however, its efficiency has declined due to aging rolling stock and insufficient investment in infrastructure development. Water and marine transport have practically lost their market share due to significant wearing of fixed assets and lack of funding. Special attention in the article is given to the analysis of the technical condition of the material and technical base of transport enterprises. The depreciation rate of fixed assets, particularly in water (0.3685) and land transport (0.4873), indicates a critical need for modernization. The high level of fixed asset wear reduces transportation efficiency and increases maintenance costs. The authors emphasize that to ensure sustainable development of Ukraine's transport complex, largescale investments are needed to restore and modernize the material and technical base, especially in railway and road transport. Moreover, implementing modern technologies to optimize transportation, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance the efficiency of transport enterprises is essential. The study results highlight the importance of an integrated approach to solving problems in the transport sector. Key directions for development include infrastructure modernization, stimulating investment in the industry, implementing environmental standards, and digitizing transportation management processes. These measures will improve the competitiveness of Ukraine's transport system, ensure its integration into the European transport network, and contribute to the country's economic growth
